Increasing your link popularity is only part of the battle when it comes to increasing your search engine rankings. There are a lot of on-site things that can make a big difference when it comes to rankings. We all know about meta tags, alt tags, headings, sitemaps and other code related stuff, but one thing that many of us forget to do is create a robots.txt file.
With my personal blog I created a robots.txt file so I could remove any junk pages and duplicate content from the search engines. Due to this my traffic went up 11.3%. Here are some of the things I did with my blog:
- Remove comment feeds from the search results so that I would not have duplicate comment text indexed.
- Removed trackback URLs from being indexed because it was causing blank pages to be indexed.
All of these things seem simple, but they can be very effective. A few years ago the more pages you had indexed the better, but now removing junk pages can help increase your rankings. Granted there could have been other factors that caused my search traffic to increase, but I feel that the robots.txt file modifications played a role in the increase.
